and Graham Crowden
alias Diana Trent and Tom Ballard who together appear in the
popular BBC Television sitcom series about a retirement home in
Bournemouth called Bayview Retirement Home.
Waiting for God is another the BBC's successful sitcoms. It has, quite rightly in my opinion, earned something of a world-wide reputation for producing high quality sitcoms and the clever script writing behind this show has helped it add Waiting for God to its long list of successes. The central characters in this show are as strong as any the BBC has helped create in recent years. Tom Ballard, a rather melancholy figure who looks upon the retirement home as his next great adventure, is the calming influence in the relationship with his suite-mate, Diana Trent, a battling old battle-axe who is constantly on the crusade against some injustice or another. This usually means head-on conflict with the administrators of the retirement home, played by Daniel Hill as the Bayview Retirement Home Manager, Harvey Bains and his dedicated if not somewhat infatuated assistant Jane Edwards played by Janiene Duvits.

Waiting for God has some way to catch up with Dad's Army or Last of the Summer Wine but has, nevertheless, notched up five series (seasons for our American viewers) to date although it is unlikely that there will be any more given the manner in which the 1994 series concluded. The show first appeared 1990 with a six-part series which introduced the characters and set the scene. Further shows followed in 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1994 with a Christmas Special in 1994. The last show is the climax of the final series in which Harvey and Jane and Tom and Diana arrive at the alter for a double wedding. Both Diana and Tom are having second thoughts but don't want to hurt the other person. Harvey and Jane exchange vows and tie the knot but when it comes to Tom's turn Tom declines to say yes explaining to Diana that marriage is a bad idea and it would ruin everything. Diana admits to being relieved and promises Tom a big reward when they get home!
